CUSTOMS TARIFF
INVESTIGATION PROMISED. ■ /’/ - WELLINGTON, Friday. An early investigation into the Customs tariff was promised by the Minister of Finance in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Coates pointed out that the time was ripe to hold another periodic enquiry. He said that New Zealand was committed under the Ottawa Agreement to conduct such an enquiry, the question having been there approached from the viewpoint of facilitating trade with the United Kingdom in return for valuable concessions given to this Dominion. It was proposed that the enquiry should commence as soon as possible. The Government was in communication with His Majesty’s Government in the United Kingdom with a view to ascertaining when the producers there would be in a position to furnish, the necessary information. When a reply was received an indication would be given as to the date on which the enquiry would commence. The personnel of the investigation body would be made known at as early a date as possible after the rising of Parliament.—(P.A.)
