INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.

In Great Britain a severe influenza epidemic is being experienced, details of which are now slowly filtering through. In certain official channels in New Zealand the usual “hush hush” methods are being adopted, and an attempt made to minimise the danger. The stupidity of officialdom in keeping from the public the real state of affairs in any epidemic cannot be too strongly condemned. If the public know exactly what is taking place they will adopt precautionary measures. That the position in Great Britain is serious can be judged from the fact that there is a death rate of 400 per week, and the conditions give it a strong resemblance to the plague of 1918. In the circumstances, it is to be hoped that officialdom in New Zealand will have enough common sense to insist upon the strictest quarantine precautions being taken in New Zeaalnd, so as to keep the Dominion free from the outbreak. It will be remembered that the plague of 1918 was introduced into New Zealand by infection on an overseas vessel which arrived at Auckland. The time to close the stable door is while the horse is still there; not after it has been stolen.
