Ministerial approval lias been given to the appointment of Dr. L. O. AleNiekle, 8.A., M.D., C1i.8., as medical superintendent of the Southland! Hospital. There died at Eketaliuna on Thursday night, at the age of 7'S years, an old resident of Eketaliuna in the person of Mrs Elizabeth Power, relict of the late A. R. Power. Deceased was born in Cheshire and came out. to New Zealand 29 years ago, having lived in Eketaliuna ever since. Her husband predeceased her IS years ago. She had. . been in indifferent* health for about three years, since the death of her son. She leaves an adult family of three daughters, Mrs A. Webb, Manchester, Mrs J. Aldred, Upper Hutt, .and Mrs J. McAnulty, Eketaliuna. At the Ticntliam School, Mr Shirlie B. Smith, of Kaituna, Masterton, whose term as a relieving teacher has expired, was entertained at morning tea by the staff. Mr \V. J. Melody, headmaster, ;n presenting Mr Smith with a wellstocked smoker’s outfit, eulogised the good work done by him both in the classroom and on the sports fieldjV where he had ever been a popular figure with staff, and pupils alike. At the Eketaliuna Aletliodist Church on Wednesday, Aliss Gladys Jane Whiteman, eldest daughter of Air and Airs R. Whiteman, of Tawataia, was married to Air James Neil Hansen, fourth son of Airs M. Hansen, of Kaiparoro. Mrs C. AlcLauchlan played the wedding music. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, looked charming in an ankle-length frock of white satin, cut on simple lines, and she wore a very pretty veil with a circlet of orange blossoms. paragus fern tied with long satin streamers.. Miss Florence Reading (chief) and Miss Ilinemoa Whiteman attended the bride. Miss Reading wore a model ankle length frock of green -floral silk georgette, green straw hat "W and satin shoes to tone, and a crystal necklace, the gift of the bridegroom. She carried a bouquet of sweet peasand asparagus fern. Miss Whiteman wore a pink floral silk georgette frock with hat and shoes to tone, and a gold armlet, the present of the bridegroom. Her bouquet was of pink-toned' sweet • peas and asparagus fern. The bride was also attended by little Ursula Payne, niece of the bridegrooyi, as flower girl. Mr Albert Hansen as best man, and Mr Garnet Whiteman as groomsman, attended the bridegroom. The future home of Mr and Mrs Hansen will be at Tokomaru.

From Palmerston North is reported the death, at the age of 78, of Baron Jean Jacques de Mey d’Alkemade, for many years supervisor of physical culture for the Wellington Education Board, and also of the New Zealand Permanent Artillery. Born at Lille, France, lie was the eldest sou of Baron Edward de Mey d’Alkemade, holder of the Legion of Honour, a noted philanthropist, and head of the Rennis proprietors’ estate, which controlled large shipping, insurance and pastoral interests in France and Belgium. He was a. grandson of Baron General lan de Mey W. d’Alkemade, a French Royalist of Huguenot origin. The late baron was an expert swordsman, athlete, and an accomplished linguist, being master of seven languages. The Swedish system of physical culture was first introduced into New Zealand by him. The late Baron came fo New Zealand in December, 1-879, from England, by the barque Bebington. Deceased was wellknown in Masterton. For several years past the deceased had been confined to his residence in Levin by paralysis, and recently lie was transferred to the Palmerston Hospital. He is survived by a sister, 3ftrs llooft, wife of Admiral Hooft, retired naval designer to the Netherlands Government. The. Baron married Florence, who died some four months ago, the second daughter of the late Mr -C. W. Moore, ecclesiastical architect and builder, of Nelson. A family of six mourns llieir loss. The heir to the title is Edward, of SydnejS; and the other members of the family are Fabert (Sydney).
