HELP FOR UNEMPLOYED

AUCKLAND MAYOR'S VIEW. AUOKLAND, Wednesday. The Mayor of Auckland, Mr G-. W. Hutchison, on his return to-day from Wellington, where ho discussed with the Unemployment Board the Auckland City Council’s scheme to provide constructive work for the unemployed at current rates, said:— “It seems to mo that the problem has resolved itself into two major considerations. lEithcr still more taxation will need to bo imposed to provide the necessary funds to enable more adequate rates to lie paid for unemployment work or tho Government must go to tho country for an internal loan for the resumption of both national and local public works of an essential nature, the interest and sinking fund to come out of the unemployment taxation. ’ ’ As taxation had readied the limit, Mr Hutchison thought the loan proposal should be considered. A resumption of useful work would react for the benefit of tho whole- community, and for this reason he heartily disagreed with the recommendation of the National Economy Commission that in future capital works must be carried on out of revenue. —-(P.A.)
