EMBARGO IMPOSED

ON AUSTRALIAN FRUIT. W ELLINGTON, Thursday. An embargo on Australian fruit and vegetables was announced by the Minister of Customs to-night. It will not apply to fruit and vegetables exported from Australia on or before 16th December. In a statement, the Hon. AY. Downie Stewart says the Government for a. long time had unsuccessfully endeavoured to secure the removal by the Commonwealth of the embargo on New Zealand fruit and fruit plants. This embargo was very serious for New Zealand, especially during the present economic financial crisis, tvhen tlu* necessity of obtaining every available market for our produets was paramount. Mr Stewart added that the embargo was not imposed to protect New Zealand fruitgrowers from Australian competition, and would be removed any time Australia consented to admit New Zealand fruit and plants.—(P.A.)
