HONOURS EVEN

LAST NIGHT’S WRESTLING. DEMETRAIL v. DETTON. Tho professional wrestling match between Dean Detton, 13st 51bs, and Harry Demetral, Hist Albs, staged in the Opera House last night by the Master ton Wrestling Association, drew a very large attendance. It ended with honours even, Demetral securing - a fall In the sixth iround and Detton a fall in the eighth and last round. Both falls came with dramatic suddenness ,and as the result of spectacular tactics. The audience was not altogether in agreement with the referee’s decision in awarding Demetral a fall. It certainly looked as if Detton had not been pinned properly, but the referee was in tho best position to decide that. While the contestants were content to get each other’s measure in the early rounds they provided some thrills and exciting moments in the latex rounds. After -trading a few resounding slaps and body punches in the 1 opening of the fourth round Demetral secured a head-lock and arm-bar and then a body scissors when both men crashed thorough the ropes to continue their struggle amongst the ringside spectators in defiance of the frantic efforts of tlie referee to separate them. Eventually the grips were unloosed and the men returned to the mat but the referee was pushed unceremoniously aside which led 'Sergeant Dyer to stop the round and warn the men that he would stop the contest if the occurrence was repeated. However, the match as already stated provided plenty' of excitement and the wrestling throughout was good and the audience was not slow in showing approval. Both men revealed themselves as good tacticians with Demetral the more- experienced and seasoned mat man. The first round was more in the nature of a testing of each other’s capabilities but the second opened briskly and saw Detton secure a leg splits twice but the wily Demetral was quick to turn the tables. Detton was thrown through tlie ropes in the third round and as the gong went Demetiral had him in a firm hold.

After a few preliminary slaps and body punches on the opening of the fourth round the real struggle for supremacy commenced. A fierce tiial of strength marked the fifth round in which the honours were fairly even. The next round lasted little more than half a minute and ended with Demetral securing a fall with a cradle hold after Detton had Hung his opponent to the mat several times by Hying tackles. In the seventh round Detton went for his man and with wrist holds made Demetral’s left arm powerless. Tlie latter, however, got free and as tho gong went had Detton at a disadvantage. Hi the last round Detton again essayed a series of flying tackles which staggered Demetral. Again the younger man used a wrist lock and eventually pinned his man with a body press to even the match.
