OLYMPIC TRIALS

RECORDS BROKEN. NEW YORK, Saturday. At Palo Alta, California, two world records were surpassed and another was equalled to-day in the American Olympic track field try-outs. Leo Sexton put the shot -12 feet S inches. John Anderson hurled the discus 165.54 ft., and Eddie Tolan equalled the record for 100 metres, doing it in 10.4 seconds. The trio -will probably represent the United States in the Olympic Games. The world’s record for the pole vault was twice surpassed by William Garrber, who cleared 14 feet 4 3-8 inches, bettering by over four inches the previous record. William Carr ran 400 metres in 46.9 seconds, compared "with tho previous world’s record of 47. Both are expected to represent tho United States in the respective events. Ralph Metcalf, Eddie Tolan and George Simpson qualified in the 100 metres, finishing in that order. The time was 10.6 sees. Joe MeCluskey broke the world’s 3000 metre steeplechase record. Bert Pearson, an IS-ycar-old school student, broke the Olympic 100 metres record in the. semi-final of the Canadian trials, taking 10 5-10secdr one-fifth of a second slower than P. Williams’s world record. Williams has received permission to go to Los Angeles without competing in the trials.
