CROSSING SMASH
TWO MEN INJURED. AUCKLAND, Saturday.* A serious accident occurred at the level crossing in Taupiri'about. 10.20 this morning, at the point where the railway lino 1 crosses the< road, to Moirinsvilie. me Charles Gee, storekeeper, of Paoroa, and his brother, Mr Alfred Gee, were proceeding to Auckland to attend the funeral of their brother, who died in the hospital annexe. Their car was caught by tho Waikato-Auckland tiain, which is due.to leave Taupiri at 10.20. Tho train was pulled up promptly, and passengers gave assistance in getting the men from the wreckage. Nurse Rogerson, of Ngaruawahia, rendered first aid.
Mr Charles Gee.was severely cut and his skull was fractured. He was removed to the Waikato Hospital, at Hamilton ,and his condition is considered very serious.
Mr Alfred Gee, who 'belongs to Taphoi, had several ribs broken, and was taken to hospital by Dr. Martin, who was called from Ngaruawahia. The crossing is obscured from the Morrinsviile pide of the crossing by the Taupiri hotel.-' There are, however, warning signs, and an automatic swinging signal and bell at the crossing. The driver of the ear was Mr Alfred Gee. He said subsequently that he could not account for the collision. He added that he did not hear the bell ringing nor see the ‘ ‘ wig-wag ’ ’ signal.
