FARM LABOUR.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —(Having in mind your sub-leader on unemployment in Saturday’s issue, and through the good offices of a friend who allowed me the use of his ’phone, I got in touch yesterday with several farmers for whom I did casual work in better days and asked them what chance there would bo of employment under the subsidy. The gist of their replies was practically the same —though hard pressed, they would not take advantage of the farm scheme —on principle. No, Sir, there is no honest reason nor excuse for the farm scheme. Why should our unemployed have to sacrifice their last shred of dependency, and be starved into going on doubtful farms'? Why should wo wait helplessly for the world to recover, when we have every means within these islands that goes to making decent work and happiness? In any case, if decent work cannot be found for us, then we demand the right to full maintenance, for there is an abundance of food here. If I know our Masterton public right, we will have their sympathy in our stand against the farm scheme. I am, etc., B. BLACK.
