HOCKEY NOTES

(BY “CORNER HIT.”) The 3rd June tournament went off without a. hitch, and great credit is due to the committee which had charge of same. Mr Burgess, as manager,_ left nothing to chance, and had all the games well up to time, and must have put a lot of time in beforehand, as he had all his section games and cards drawn up so as to cause as little delay as possible. One who has put in a lot of useful work and deserves to be mentioned is Mr R. Sayer, who, before and after the tournament, was a willing helper. The standard of hockey was good, and all players seem to have enjoyed the games. The Stags A Kiwi A match was one of the best seen on the ground, and there was little between the two teams. Massey was outstanding and played as though inspired. Kiwis were unlucky not to scoie in o melee in front of Stags’ goal, but the defence was too sound. In the semifinals, Stags were beaten by Dalefield B, -and the previous hard game must have told on Stags. In the final, Carterton beat Dale-field B. Carterton are to be congratulated on their win, and it will help to boost hockey in the southern end again, as at the beginning (of the season they had a hard job to get a team out. Whitburn is playing very nice hockey, and should see his place in the reps, this year.

The ladies ’ games were all very even, and some very fine games were seen. Greytown were playing well, and although beaten in their section by Gladstone B, were not disgraced. High School A Avon the B section by defeating Ramblers A. Gladstone A Avon the C section. The newly-formed Kaliutara (Magpies) team came out winners in the D section, and it was very pleasing to sec a nc Avteam come out so aa'cll. In the final, Gladstone Avon their game against High School A in a very interesting game.

The junior games Avere avcll contested, and Old Girls fought out the final with Gladstone A, and I must congratulate the Old Girls in getting into the final, as on their cup matches I did not give them a chance. Their game was all the more meritorious, seeing they had tAA'o first-class players in their team. Gladstone, by Avinning the six-a-side, have demonstrated what practice and training will do, and they, like last year’s Avinners, have -obtained AA r hat they Avere aiming for, and it can’t be done in one or tAvo -seasons; so don’t get disheartened, you first year’s players. Rome Avasn’t built in a day.

A lot of good will be obtained out of tlio tournament from the players, promoters and tlic public view. Great interest v r as shown by the public, and there was a crowd which reminded one of the hockey days some 20 years back, and they one and all seemed to bo well pleased with the day’s games. The promoters were more than satisfied, as there were a few pessimists who would have liked to throw cold water on the idea when it was mooted last year. The players have learnt a lot and were not all prepared for so many games, and found that those who had not been in constant training were not as fit as they thought they were. To those who put such a lot of time into the tournament to make it a success, I offer my ! congratulations, and also to the playwho entered into the games with c <i»l£».did spirit, such

■' Carterton played a drarvn 'Stags ana and iby so doing game last Satm _.. m ]ead , by one have put Kiwis m aJU i Melpoint from Stags. M. . and ville were outstanding for was} played a great game. F. WiUn , playing Avell, and, as I mentioneu fore, his speed is a great help to him. Whitburn and Fisher, for 'Carterton, were the tivo best players for their side, and Avere Avell on their game.

Khvi A played their B’s and it Avas more of a practice match than a cup match. At half-time the teams changed their backs around and it gave the B’s some good practice. There are some good boys in the B’s and Avith a little more coaching they will be a good team next season.

Stars travelled to Dalefield and were beaten by the home team. The (Stars have a few boys who have the makings of good players but seem to forget -what is told them, and should try and remember to put it into practice when in a match. Dalefield will be a good team next season and aro combining well.

Mauriceville journeyed to Kahutara, and although they boat the local boys they did not have it all their own way. They were hospitably entertained by the Kahutara players and were entertained at a dance in the evening and all left at a late hour feeling as if they would all like to be back again next week.

LADIES’ GAMES. Gladstone came home winners by 3 to 0 in a very Mean and fast game. Gladstone owe their w r in to the fine attack of their forwards who do not waste any time when in the circle. High School have the players to make a first-class team but fail to go on with the attack and do not follow in when in the circle and all their play is

wasted. This was a good game to ■watch and full of thrills. Miss Denby, High School goalie, played a wonder ful game and was the mainstay of backs. Miss Winter on the rig’ _ tfi ic was playing well but like - w i n g ors takes the ball too niost wingcentring. far up before

Grey town ’ _ 0 reytovi' , ; eat Mauriceville on the game ground in a fast and hard IIT> and it was anybody’s game right till ball of time. Grey town are on . the improve and the young forwards -cl

arc showing up. Ramblers beat Carterton at LansdoAvno by 3 to 2. At half-time Carterton Avere leading by 2 to 0 and Avere playing a great game, but the second half saw Ramblers run right over them to put on 3 goals. Old Girls demonstrated Avlicre their Avealcness is by again draAving, this time Avith Dalefield. Their defence is strong but in attack their forwards fail Avhen in the circle and fail to go on Avith their attack and insiead of hitting the ball, do too much tapping. The Dalefield forwards Avere never in their opponent’s circle, yet the Old Girls could not press home their advantage. This is the fifth draw the Old Girls have had and demonstrates that in defence they are sound. Parkvalc, Avith plenty of good hockey and combination in all parts of tlic game, beat Ivahutara by 3 to 1. Parkvale have improved and aro playing good hockey and Avlien they meet Ramblers next match it will be a good game. JUNIORS. Old Girls aro on the improve and put up 3 to 0 against High School A. There Avas plenty of giving and take play and both teams had plenty of chances to improve their score but failed to do so. Technical School, under the coaching of Mr Burnip and D. Burgess, have improved and dreAV Avitli Huesher. Hueshers did not play as Avell as in previous matches and must liaA r o felt the effects of the tournament but Avill be into it again on Saturday. Technical School are on the improve and are playing much better hockey.

There Avas a surprise in the Sohvay■Gladstone match, and Gladstone easily came home Avinners by 8 to 2. Sohvay, Avho have not been out for some Aveelcs, Avere stale for the Avant of training, and their halves failed to give their forAvard-s the support they AA’anted. The Avingers take the ball too far doAvn before they pass in. Gladstone -are playing good hockey and are good all round.

(Stags Avill have the services of H. Sayer, Avho has got a transfer from Dalefield. His presence will add strength to the Stags team.

Kier, of the Mauriceville team, has got a transfer to the Stars team, and he Avill be a great help to those forAvards.

J. Adams will, I hear, be soon out again for Stars, and he Avill be a great help to their backs and AA T ith these tAvo players the Star team Avill be greatly strengthened.

W. 801 l Avill be seen in his old place in the Kiwi forwards on Saturday, and ‘Stags Avill haA'c a hard game to staA r o off defeat.
