Irish Chieftain put up a useful performance Avhen he ran third to Puss Moth and Seneschal in the second division of the Jeiwois Handicap, at Auckland, for the pair that finished in front of him are both above the average. This three-year-old has not had much racing experience, but he comes from a good family and is likely to do a lot better before his racing career is over.

Although Croupier has no immediate engagements, the son of Surveyor is making excellent progress under George Holland’s guidance. This tliree-year-old has furnished into a solid-looking horse and promises to be better than ever next season. So far Croupier has not been overtaxed in his work, but on the few occasions that he has been sent along fast on the track lie has clearly demonstrated that he still retains his pace. He lias been nominated for Australian spring events.

While it is necessary hoav to have horses branded before they can be registered for racing in Australia, some uncertainty seems to preA 7 ail as to the exact application of the rule. It is knoAvn that this step must be taken in the case of a horse going to the CommonAvealth for the first time, but it is thought that horses avlio have made previous visits are exempt. A. McAulay will brand the yearling Haere Tonu, by Hunting Song from Martianette, if it is decided to send him to 'Sydney, but he is making official inquiries as to Avliether it Avill be necessary in the cases of Nightmarch and True Shaft, both of whom have already been in Australia.
