SHOOTING ACCIDENT

A RIVER TRAGEDY. FOXTON, Friday. A shooting accident, resulting in the death of Tertaere Pomare, single, aged 26, the eldest son of the late Sir Maui and Lady Pomare, Lower Hutt, occurred at the Devil’s Elbow, four miles up the Manawatu River from Foxton, this morning. Deceased set out in a boat with a shot-gun to pick up eel baskets. Later a Foxton resident collecting firewood discovered the body alongside the boat, which was pulled into the bank. Deceased had evidently been in the act of pulling a. fully-loaded sliot-gun from the bottom of the boat, when the hammer of the right barrel caught and discharged the cartridge. The pellets entered the chest, throat and face. Death was instantaneous. Pomare was visiting relatives here. —(P.A.) ACCIDENTAL DEATH. FOXTON, This Day. At the inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Tertaere Pomare, the Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to the accidental discharge of a gun when it was being drawn from the boat.—(P.A.)
