MAN FOUND DEAD
TRAGEDY IN TINUI. An elderly man named Arthur Dillon, aged 63 years, was found dead late yesterday afternoon in a deep, scrub-cov-ered gully in the rough back country beyond Tinui, about 50 miles from Masterton. He had been missing since last Hriday and when found had a strap tied round liis neck and a deep gash in his throat. A blood-stained pocket knife was found in liis pocket. The late Mr Dillon, who was a single man, was employed as a scrub-cutter on Riverside Station. Tie lived in a wharo about four miles from the homestead and was last seen alive on Friday. The manager of the station had been away since Friday and on his return yesterday w r as informed that the man was missing. Constable Wilson, of Tinui, was communicated with and a search party was formed. Dillon's body was found late yesterday afternoon not far from his whare. It is thought that the deceased inflicted a wound in his throat with a penknife which was found in his pocket covered with blood, and then tied a strap around his neck and, attaching the end of the strap to a small tree, threw himself down into the gully. The weight of the body uprooted the tree and the man fell about fourteen feet down the gully. The body, which will have to be conveyed by pack-horses on account of the roughness of the country, will be taken to-day to Tinui, where an inquest will be held this afternoon. The late Mr Dillon has a brother living at Tinui. The funeral will take place to-mor-row (Friday), leaving the residence of his brother, Mr Thomas Dillon, Tinui, at 3 p.m. for the Tinui Cemetery.
