MOTHERS AND SONS

Y.M.C.A. FUNCTION. A BRIGHT GATHERING. Last night the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium was the scene of a bright and happy gathering of mothers and sons who partook of tea and listened to an address of particular interest delivered by Dr. Helen Cowic. There was also provided a most attractive programme of vocal and instrumental items. The invitation to mothers and sons to attend the function, which was complimentary to Mother’s Day celebrated during the past week-end, was largely availed of. The president of the Y.M.C.A. Ladies’ Auxiliary, Mrs M. G. Mackay, presided and had as her associate her son Mr J. Mackay. In extending a welcome to the gathering Mr A. J. Daysh apologised for the absence of the president of the Y.M.C.A., Mr H, M. Peacock, who found it impossible to be present. Mi Daysh referred to the splendid work carried out for the Y.M.C.A. by the Ladies’ Auxiliary. This, he said, was greatly appreciated and lie expressed the hope that all the boys present would grow up to be manly men. A feature of the function was the customary introduction of mothers. At this stage of the proceedings Mrs A. iKilgour, on behalf of the Ladies' Auxiliary, presented the president, Mrs Mackay, with a bouquet to mark her first public appearance in the presidential chair. “We are very glad of the opportunity to express the loyalty of her ‘children’ as we call ourselves,’’ said Mrs Kilgour m handing Mrs Mackay a beautiful bouquet amidst applause. In addressing the mothers and sons Dr. Helen Cowic said she did not intend to make a set speech but would tell them a story. After relating the story the speaker directed attention to the lesson it contained for all. That was not to put off to the future acts of kindness. At the conclusion of kei remarks Dr. Cowie was presented with a bouciuet by one of the boys present. The "toast of “Mother” was proposed by Master Finlay Milne in an appropriate verse. lii replying to the toast Mrs N. Prior said she felt sure that the mothers present would not change thensons for anyone. Addressing her remarks to the boys she said that the mothers staked their all on their sons and she was sure the boys present would not let their mothers down. The following contributed to the musical programme: —Mrs W. Laird and Mrs H. M. Morton, vocal solos; Master James Welch, pianoforte solo; Master Frank Hogg, recitation; Messrs R. and I. Hills, instrumental duet. A gymnasium item was given by a group of boys. Mrs Mackay expressed her t'hanlcs to those who had contributed to the programme and to the members of the Ladies’ Auxiliary who had done so much towards making the function the success it had been.
