THE MAYOR’S REPLY. TO COUNTY CHAIRMAN. “During tho term of my office, which commenced in 1924, the Mastciton Borough Council has paid in to the Cemetery Account £4OO of the ratepayers’ money in order to make up the deficiency in the working of tho cemetery,” said the Mayor (Mr T.- Jordan) this morning to a “Daily Times” representative, Avhen referring to the statements made at the meeting of the Masterton County Council .yesterday afternoon, Avhen criticising the observations made at a recent meeting of the Masterton Borough Council by Mr Jordan in respect to County Council contributions towards the upkeep of the Masterton cemetery. “In that period,” continued tho Mayor, “we have received tho sum of £3O from the Masterton County Council for this purpose. The population of the Masterton Borough is S6OO, and that of the Masterton County is 3670.” “Can it be said that they have paid their fair proportion”’ asked the Mayor. Mr Jordon pointed out that befoie making his criticism of the County Council’s action in the matter, he asked tho County Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, to ascertain from his chairman if there ivas any prospect of the cheque being made a\ T ailable for the ycai ended 31st March, 1932, stating that if there Avas a prospect of this being done he, Mr Jordan, Avould refrain from saying anything on the subject at the Council meeting. “I Avas told,” said Mr Jordan, “that the County Council’s decision could not be altered, and it Avas then that I decided to make the statement I did.” The Mayor said he did not Avish to make any long statement on the subject, but did Avisli to make it clear that it AA-os due to the borough’s contribution of £4OO that the cemetery account AA’as in credit.
