HARRIERS

MASTERTON CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. “The committee Ims great pleasure in reporting substantial progress in all the club’s activities,” states the annual report of the Masterton Harrier Club, to be presented at the annual general meeting, to be held at . the T.ALC.A. Rooms oil Thursday night. ‘‘The response of club members to the appeals of the committee for assistance iu its various enterprises has been excellent, and it is sincerely hoped that the same spirit will prevail during the coming season,” continues the report. ‘•Finance. —The linances of the club for the past year have had the deepest consideration of the committee, owing to our increased expenditure and iinancial obligations in the administration of the greatly enlarged club. However, after careful management the club is now left with a small cash balance, apart from a sum of money on trust in the Rost Office. Although the club has a prospect of heavy financial responsibilities in the coming season, it is hoped, with tho assistance of all members and supporters, that our credit balance will be maintained. Competitions. —The club was again represented by an A and B team in the provincial championships, and managed to secure third place in the B teams’ race. We extend hearty congratulations to the winners of those two events. Inter-club: Alasterton, by its splendid team work, retained the Sanders Cup from the Hutt harriers, and the evenness of the teams is clearly seen when one learns that wo won by the narrow margin of only one point. The two races for the Benson Trophy resulted in a win for Wanganui on the aggregate points. In the first race, at Wanganui, the hometeam won brilliantly by a large maigin of points, which gave us a big handicap for the final run on our own ground, a month later. The team spirit of the .Masterton ‘twelve’ prevailed, and Wanoanui in turn were soundly beaten. However, on the agregate, they took the ‘gato’ to Wanganui, and we really appreciate our rivals’ determined effort to wrest from us the coveted trophy, and congratulate them oil their splendid win. District championships: (I) Ten miles: L. Rutherfurd and J. Alulvcy dead-heated after a sterling performance by both men. (2) Five miles: Won by Jim Burns, with L. Rutherfurd second. Club championship and Wyeth Medal (5 miles): Also won by Jim Burns, with L. Rutherfurd again filling second place. Shaw Rose Bowl: This keenly-contested trophy was won by the donor’s son, Eric, after narrowly defeating McDonald in evenly contested races. Cameron Cup: This cup was won by Wm. Pointon, who is to be congratulated on his splendid run. lan Shaw was runner-up, taking the miniature. Marathon: The season under review saw a Marathon staged by the club, from Featlierston to Masterton, for the first time by any harrier or other athletic club for many years. Four members finished the distance, the race going to Eric Sliaw, whose time was just over three hours. Trophies.— Tho trophies presented by supportcis o the club were: Mr C. A. Willis’s trophv, won by G. W. Kemp ton; Mr D. H. Bothwell’s medal, won by L. Dutheifurd- Mr J. Bradbury’s medals, won by W. Jo bans on, J. Barnes, 11. Boys am G. W. Kempton; Mr L. S.
