Mr David Smith, of Feildii«Aeuid formerly of Masterton, is on visit to Masterton.

Mr Eric McGarvie, of Carterton, who had the misfortune to fall upon a sharp stake, which severely injured his body, is making satisfactory progress in the Masterton Hospital. Mr G. A. Troup, of Wellington, who has been in ill-health for some time, has, acting on medical advice, entered a private hospital in Wellington for nursing care.

The marriage took place recently in Melbourne of Mr Norman Henry son of Mrs L. Higgs, of Victoria, and formerly of Masterton, to Miss Treseowthick, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. Treseowthick of Ivanhoe. Mr Higgs was formerly on the staff of Messrs. and Co., Masterton, and after the death of Mr Higgs in Masterton, the family removed to Melbourne, where Mr Norman Higgs holds an important position in the commercial life of the city. A large number of friends assembled at the Maurieeville West Hall on Saturday night to farewell Mrs P. J. Softly who will sail on Thursday for a liealth-recruiting trip to the Old Country. Mr V. K. Lemberg, who- presented Mrs Softly on behalf of residents and friends with a handsome travelling trunk and a gold clock mounted on a greenstone block, said it was 12 years since Mrs Softley had visaed her relatives in England'and he was sure the reunion would be a happy one. Sutherland, of Ngaipu station, assembled to congratulate Mrs Sutherland on reaching her 80th birthday, and Avisli her “many happy returns.’’ The gathering was a complete surprise to Mrs Sutherland, the crowning moment being the presentation of a beautiful birthday cake, artistically Iceland decorated with eighty candlAsi These Avere duly lighted and ceremoniously extinguished by Mrs Sutherland. Her eldest son, Mr Alex Sutherland, then proposed her continued good health and happiness, and the toast was enthusiastically received Avith musical Mr D. M. Sutherland, speaking on liV half of his wife, mentioned the factthat they had been married years, and expressed the pleasure it o-ave them to- see their children and relatives gathered round them once more.
