UNPAID RATES
AND REMISSION OF PENALTY. CHR ISTCHUHCII, Monday. A motion proposing that a joint application bv combined local bodies should be made to the Prime Minister for fresh legislation to enable the remission of the penalty for unpaid rates was before the City Council to-night. The motion was agreed to and the Finance Committee was empowered to consider the matter. In discussion, it was stated that the City Council had an overdraft of £170,000, secured by rates struck but not vet’paid. Tt was also made clear that the carrying of the resolution would not empower the council to remit the penalty. The'Mayor. Mr T). G. Sullivan, M.l ~ said it would be mistaken for the ratepaver to assume that there was anv prospect of easy escape from the penalty. If legislation were passed, the most they could hope for was a slight extrusion of time and possibly a provision to give discretionary power to the council in cases of hardship. (P.A.)
