IRISH FREE STATE

TROUBLE FEARED

OVER FIANNA FAIL SUCCESS,

Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyright

LONDON, Friday

Many people in Ireland fear that serious trouble is imminent owing to the Republicans’ election success tending to incite them to determined efforts to secure the inclusion of Northern Ireland in a completely independent AllIreland Republic.

ELECTION MURDER.

DUBLIN, Friday

Joseph Leddy has been sentenced to a year’s imprisonment for the murder of Patrick Reynolds, a Government candidate in the recent Irish Free State elections, whose widow is now a member of the Dail Eireann, and to a year for the manslaughter of Detective Patrick McGeehan, the sentences to be concurrent. The defence alleged that Red terror prevailed in Leitrim at the time of the shooting.

The jury recommended Leddy to mercy on the manslaughter charge on account of provocation. The Judge signified his entire agreement with this, and promised to forward the jury’s recommendation to the Minister of Justice in order that Leddy might not lose his pension as an ex-member of the Irish Constabulary.

The shooting occurred at Foxfield, County Leitrim, on 13th February. The men were killed with a double-barrelled shotgun. AN UGLY PROBLEM. (Received Saturday, 0.0 a.m.) LONDON, Friday. “The Times” correspondent at Dublin says that De Valera faces a problem which is likely to assume ugly proportions. The Sinn Fein and other extremists do not care whether the oath is removed or not. They resolutely - refuse to recognise British connection in any shape or form, so, as De Valera will not placate the Republican Left Wing by any constitutional juggling, these men will be as great a menace to the new Government as they were to Cosgrave; in fact, they already derisively describe the new Government as “His Majesty’s Ministers.”
