TRUST LANDS TRUST

monthly meeting. The acting-chairman (Mr E. G. Eton) presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust, held last night. There were also present:— Messrs W. 11. Jackson, R. Krahagen, T. F. Watson, G. Selby, J. L. Hughes and D. CasclUrg. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs J. M. Coradme (chairman) and T. V\ agg. A letter was received from the Defence Office, Masterton, stating that the lease of the Drill Hall to the Defence Department expired on 29th February, 1032, and asking whether the Trust would be prepared to accept a reduced rental if the department accepted further tenancy. The Building and Leasing Committee reported that it had ottered the department a renewal of the lease for a term of live years, from Ist March, on the same conditions as in the existing lease, with the exception that the rental be reduced from £7O to £6O per annum. On the recommendation of the Building and Leasing Committee, it was decided that a Trust tenant be granted the sum of £5 to compensate him for damage to stock, etc., caused by . the rain coming through the roof of his shop last December. The tenant had claimed £l3, but was now agreeable to accept- the sum granted. The Trust special committee, consisting of Messrs Eton, Krahagen, Hughes and Selby, tabled a report of a meeting held for the purpose of discussing with the Assistant Land Registrar (Mr J. Burke, Wellington), the matter of having the Trust lands placed under the Land Transfer Act, and to clear up discrepancies in the areas of various sections. Others present at the meeting were the Mayor (Mr T. Jordan), repiesenting the Borough Council, and Mr E. P. Fowler, Government Valuer. The committee's recommendation that the whole of the Trust lands be surveyed and placed under the Land Transfer Act, and that a new map be prepared for the Trust Office, was adopted. Thanks were expressed to the Mayor and Messrs Burke and Fowler for valuable assistance rendered. Mr A. W. Reynolds, surveyor, forwarded a plan of the area of land at Memorial Park to be reserved for future tennis courts. The acting Priiicipal of the Masterton Technical School applied for a grant of 15s for the purchase of a set of brushes for a pupil taking a course in ticket-writing. The boy was lo years of age, and was an orphan. The application was granted. The- treasurer reported a credit balance of £474 8s Sd. Receipts for the month amounted to £624 17s. At a meeting of the Trust Lands Trust some months ago, an application was received from the Masterton Dental Clinic Committee for the lease of a- vacant portion of a property owned bv the 'Trust. It was proposed to erect a new clinic building on the section, and the Trust had previously granted a sum of £250 towards the cost of the erection of the building. It was decided to advise the committee that the lease would be granted at the same rental as that received under the present lease, which amounted to £6 TSs 6d a year, or about 5 per' cent on the capital valuation. The Clinic Committee, however, were of the opinion that the Trust intended to grant the lease at a peppercorn rental, and had advised the Education Board’accordingly. In order to arrive at a satisfactory agreement, and to further appeal for the granting of the lease at a nominal rental, a deputation representing the Dental Clinic waited on the Trust at its meeting last month. The chief point stressed by the deputation was that the £2 for £1 subsidy it was hoped to obtain on the Trust ’s £2oo would not be made available unless the lease were granted at a nominal rental of, say, £1 a year. The proposal was fully discussed, and it was decided that no further action be taken in regard to the deputation’s request for a reduction in the rental. Mr T. F. Watson, however, gave notice of motion to rescind the previous resolution fixing the rental at £6 18s Gd. The matter was further ventilated at the meeting of the Trust-, when Mr Watson’s notice of motion was considered. After a lengthy discussion, in the course of which opinions differed somewhat, the motion was defeated }iy four votes to three.
