PAHIATUA CARNIVAL.

At the Pahiatua Swimming Carnival on Monday night, a number of Masterton swimmers competed with success. Masterton must surely boast an infant prodigy, a coming champion, m the person of I. Wallace, who competed ( in the girls’ learners’ race, one width, and ‘ ‘strolled in” in 15 seconds. That was good for a girl who was competing in a race for first year learners against the local beginners. But imagine the j consternation of the officials when this ; same learner from Masterton stepped , out in the girls’ 33 1-3 yards open handicap, 16 years and under, and actually won the event in good time. This was an astonishing performance. If this girl only develops her swimming in future years as phenomenally as she has in her first year, she will be a gieut swimmer. The officials worked hard, and arrangements ran smoothly ioi the most paid under the direction of the president (Mr -I. A. Walsh) and the energetic secretary (Mr C. E. B. Irving).
