AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MASTERTON CLUB’S SPORTS,

EXCELLENT CONTESTS,

Ideal weather favoured the Masterton A.A. Club for the holding of its annual sports gathering in the- Park Oval yesterday. The attendance was fairly good and the various events provided excellent contests. The track was extremely hard but in fine order, resulting in good times in several events. In addition to the representatives of Wairarapa clubs there were many competitors from furtlier afield including Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu and Canterbury.

The organisation of the meeting was all that could be desired and the events were got off with the utmost smoothness. The secretary, Mr J. "V. Dolan, and all officials, are to be congratulated on their work. There was rather a startling crash in the second heat of the half-mile cycle race when Eyton, who was in the lead at the home turn, skidded and fell, bringing the field down with the exception of Sayers who went on to win. Lett and Pennington remounted and finished the race in that order. Several riders received cuts and abrasions and Mulford suffered an injure to his knee, hiist-aid was rendered I>v the ambulance men. A number of the spectators had a narrow escape when a rider crashed into the single wire fence which was snapped. V. .Jenkins, the New Zealand champion, was set a hard task in tne 100 yards handicap and finished fourth in his heat. S. Pye, a Masterton runner, won the event in a sterling finish, denkins won nicely in the 120 yards Messenger Memorial, conceding in some cases substantial handicaps.

A feature of the meeting was the pole vaulting of W. H. Roberts, Carterton, and X. W. Mulvey, the Canterbury College champion. Both cleared 10ft Tin.

Jn the cycle events T. McCord retained the Boomerang Cup while 11. J. Morris of Petono won the half and mile events. The three miles cycle went to L. Roberts, Wellington.

G. Bayne, New Zealand champion, failed to wear down the field in the mile and finished fourth. The race was won by C. Stowe. L. Hack ran nicely in the 440 yards to win. T>. F. Anderson off the 25vds mark won the SSO yards m fast time. , , Miss T. Kench, the New Zealand lady champion, did not show her best form and was unplaced in the 75 yards heat and was third in the 100 yards, but failed in the final. Miss D.
