The next three or four days Avill be .. spent by Lord and Lady Bledisloe at the seaside. Next week their Excellencies will fulfil a number of engage' ments at Auckland, and on Fcbiuaiy 1 will leave for a visit to the Bay . of Islands. On completion of that visit they will return to Auckland for a dmy or two and then go to Wellington ffSr the special session of Parliament. At the close of the session the GovernorGeneral and Lady Bledisloe will return to Auckland and go into residence again at Government House. Mr. J. Miller, S.M., returned from Dannevirke to Masterton yesterday.

A Sydney cable states that James Carlton, the Australia sprint champion, has announced that he intends entering the priesthood and definitely will not go to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles. -m After his four months’ illness, Mnf Arthur Henderson resumed work at the British Labour Party headquarters on Tuesday. He intends to leave for Geneva at the end of the month to preside over the International Labour Disarma-. ment Conference. jjp Mr. A. C. Davidson, General Manager of the Bank of New South Wales, paid a brief visit to Masterton yesterday afternoon, on his way from Napier to Wellington. Mr. Davidson, who is at present making a tour of the Dominion and visiting all branches, was accompanied by Mrs. Davidson and by Mr. R. C. Addison, Inspector for New Zealand to the Bank of New South Wales and Mrs. Addison. In the University of New Zealand Bookkeepers Certificate of Proficiency examination, D. A. Hann and W. G. Rew secured passes in bookkeeping I, states a Wellington Press Association message. The following Masterton candidates also passed in the same subjeet in Accountancy, Professional, R. Gully, B, J. 11. Hancock, W. G. Mulvey and H. V. J. Rees. The death is announced of Mr. Louis Brennan, inventor of the dirigible toiy” pedo bearing liis name and of the roscopia monorail system Qf transport. He suffered from bronchitis and went to Montreaux to recuperate, where he was knocked down by a motor car on December 26. After occupying the position of president of the Auckland Racing Club for nearly 30 years, Sir Edwin Mitchelson lias ‘handed in his resignation to the committee, and a special meeting will be held next week to consider whether the committee will accept it or not. In his earlier days Sir Edwin was actively engaged in horseraciijg,/ and was one of a syndicate of three who founded the first stud farm in the Dominion. The beautiful gardens at i Ellerslie, which are a feature of the p city, are almost wholly due to Sir Edwin’s expert botanical knowledge. The club paid him a unique tribute when, in 1929, his bust in bronze, executed by the eminent Australian sculptor, Sir Bertram Maclcennal, was unveiled on the lawn at Ellerslie.
