MASTERTON COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The chairman, Councillor W. I. Armstron, presided at the monthly meeting of the Mastcrton County Council, held on Saturday. Others present were Crs. 11. 11. Mawlcy, Gordon Lee, I 1: R. Welch, J. W. Colquhoun, J. W. A. Falloon and. G. Moore. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, advised, in reply to the council’s application for additional finance for maintenance on the Master-ton-Martinborough (Main Highway that the council would, in the near future, be asked to state its financial position with regard to the maintenance of all main highways in the county. The letter was received.

The chairman of the Main Highways Board wrote stating that the general financial situation was such that close control must be exercised over all expenditure. In particular, it was most necessary that the board should be fuilv an are of all commitments in the nature of contracts let involving the board in expenditure after March 31 next. Local authorities carrying out work on main highways are requested to obtain the concurrence of the board from now on before accepting any tender involving the board in any liability in the way of subsidy after March 31.

The letter was received, the chairman stanting that the council was acting in accordance with the views expressed in the communication. The Commissioner of Transport advised that in order to bring into operation the provisions of the Transport (Licensing Act, 1931, authorities would bo established in the near future foi the purpose of regulating commercial road transport. These authorities would, amongst other things, lix timetables for the various services and also the type of vehicle to be used. In this connection, the letter pointed out, it would be essential that all information as regards special speed and weight restrictions should be available, for, although the first business of the licensing authorities would be with passenger services only, it was proposed to apply the principle to goods services as necessity arose.

The Clerk (Mr J. C. D. Mackley) said that as far as he knew they really had no special local restrictions. The communication was received.

Tlio Wairarapa South County Council forwarded an instrument of appointment authorising Mr N. J. Gerrand, the Mastcrton county ranger, to impound cattle wandering at largo in the Waingawa river-bed. On the motion of Councillor Armstrong, it was decided that the Wairarapa county be thanked for tJieir action.

The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Distributing Co., Ltd., and the Mastcrton A. and P. Association were granted cattle saleyard licenses under the Health Act, 1920:

The ranger reported having dealt with four horses and ten sheep during the month. Fees for the month amounted to 13s, and the total fees received since April 1 amounted to £>>6 8s 6d.

The finance committee’s report was adopted and accounts amounting to £3537 17s Id were passed for payment.

OVERSEER’S REPORT. The Overseer (Mr B. L. Larsen) reported inter alia: —Opaki riding: Wel-lington-Napier Highway: Mt. Bruce section; formation of second four miles: Good progress has been made with the metalling; rough mettalling of haunches has been completed and the Mt. Bruce crusher was started on the 17th to supply crushed metal for the final Bruce have been put in. Bruce Section- Corners have been cut back and superelevated near McLachlan’s; good progress has been made with this woik. Mt. Bruce Crusher: Crushing was resumed on December 17, and good progress has been made with crushing of metal for the re-formation work.
