PARLIAMENT.
It has been announced that there is a possibility of an early session of Parliament, and such is necessary to deal with the many important problems which confront the Dominion in its internal affairs. The chief business of the Government will be to put its financial house in order. The scandalous .policy of extravagance which has been indulged in by the Governments of the past few years can no longer be tolerated, as it has brought the Dominion to the verge of financial ruin. The deliberate waste of money that has been going on —and is still in operation has contributed in a very large measure to the depression in New Zealand to-day. No real effort has been made by recent Governments to balance the Budget. There have been a few minor and unimportant economies carried out, accompanied by the blare of political trumpets, but hundreds of thousands of pounds have been —or are to be—wasted on work for which there is no justification whatever. The Government has yet to put forward an equitable 'and sound unemployment policy—so far there has been chiefly a deplorable waste of money, and it is to be hoped that the Government will make some effort to bring into operation a scheme that will cover all classes of unemployed and will result in a fair return for the money spent. The Dominion still lacks a Finance Minister who is able to provide a taxation policy that will draw money from the right source, and not favour one section of the community at the expense of the other. The electors of the Dominion returned the present Government in order to give it a chance to straighten out the muddle for which most of its members were responsible, and should it fail to make something of a show in that direction during its term of office, then New Zealand will probably be controlled politically by forces which will not be in the best interests of the people generally.
