WINTER ASCENT.

+ OF MITRE PEAK. CLAIMED AS FIRST. Tho October number of the “Tararua Tramper, ” the official publication of the Tararua Tramping Club, Wellington, contains an excellent description of an ascent of Mitre Peak under winter conditions, by three members of the Tararua" .Club, early last month. “There is no record of a previous climb of this peak in winter conditions, ” says the writer of the article, “and it is probable that the recent ascent was the first of its kind.” Perhaps some reader may have particulars of a winter ascent of Mitre, made previous to that referred to in the “Tararua Tramper.” Should such be the case, the secretary of the Wairarapa Tramping Club, P.O. Box 445, Masterton, would be glad to have date and details.

The Mitre (5154 feet) is the highest peak in the Tararuas, but is very little higher than a number of other peaks in the range. Under normal conditions it is considered an easy climb. On the occasion of the Tararua Club members’ climb last month, the summit of Mitre was reached in less than four hours from Mitre Flats.
