DISTRESS AMONG MINERS.
WESTPORT DEMONSTRATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association). WESTPORT, Monday. This afternoon some 500 or 600 miners from Millerton, Denniston, Stockton and Westport mines came to Westport for the purpose of holding a demonstration with a view to calling attention to the distress amongst miners, particularly at Millerton, where very short time has been worked for some time past. Gars conveyed the demonstrators to just outside the boundary of Westport. A procession Was then formed, headed by the G vanity Band, and paraded through Brougham, Palmerston, Lyndhurst and Russell streets, finishing up in Victoria Square. Here tho Deputy-Mayor, Mr J. M. Robertson, presided, and speeches were made by the leaders of the miners from the several centres, deploring the importation of coal when New Zealand is able to supply all the country, wants, and generally calling attention to the need for more consideration being given to the coal-mining industry. The De-puty-Mayor expressed a hope that the Government and others concerned would take notice, and that good would result.
The proceedings were quite orderly.
