FATAL FIRE.
OLD MAN SUFFOCATED. (By Telegraph—Press Association). PALMERSTON N., Sunday. Early this morning fire practically destroyed a’ six-roomed residence in Ruahine Street, owned and occupied by William Mitchell, 'B7 years of age, who was suffocated. In the house with deceased were two daughters and a nurse. A daughter, who was sleeping in a back room, disturbed by the crackling, gbt out of bed and awakened her sister, nurse and father and all were able to get out of the house. Deceased, who was a cripple, returned to his bedroom, evidently to get some papers from a safe and was overcome by smoke and collapsed. The fire had a strong hold when the brigade received the alarm but it was quickly on the scene. A rescue party was sent in to find Mitchell, who was not in the room where the safe was. Until the lire was subdued the firemen could not enter the room in which the unfortunate man was subsequently found.
