On his past form a mile appeared to be his best distance, but the manner in ■ which he stayed a mile and a quarter was evidence of improved form. Ho is very well, and having demonstrated his stamina further successes can be looked for during the next few weeks. Dry- Area provided some excitement in the Otaio Hurdles, showing his customary dash. He led to the first hurdle, which he hit hard. His rider, J. Kerr, was hanging down from the horse’s neck, but eventually made a miraculous recovery. He well deserved the round the round of applause which greeted him when he passed the stand in a good position. After lasting with the leaders for seven furlongs, he faded out quickly.

Painkiller was backed in the Spring Stakes at Waslulyke as if she was a certainty, and her supporters were never seriously uneasy, though the 2-year-old Monastic led her to the straight. Painkiller is a smart galloper, but not likely to get past the useful class. This Avas her second win, as she scored in the maiden race at the Christchurch Hunt meeting. She is the first of the progeny of the imported sire Shambles to score.
