A BRILLIANT SUCCESS.

CHAMPIONSHIP BALL. GLADSTONE HOCKEY CLUB. The Gladstone Ladies ’ Hockey Club’s championship ball was an exceptionally enjoyable function. At the beginning of this season a new ladies’ hockey club was formed at Gladstone and entered in the ladies’ senior competition. The new club had a successful season and winning the championship it was decided to celebrate the event by holding' a championship ball at the Gladstone Town/Ball on Thursday night. In every way the function was an entire success, and dancing did not cease until the early hours of the morning. A Maori orchestra of six provided wonderful music, and a record crowd assembled from Masterton, Carterton, Mt. Bruce, and the surrounding districts. The hall was decorated with black and gold streamers (the club’s colours), and their kewpie, dressed in similar colours, occupied a place of honour in the decorative scheme. Largo quantities of flowering currant and spring flowers from Middle Run, tastefully arranged, gave a delightfully dainty touch. Tall and stately palms placed about the hall also helped to complete a decidedly pleasing scene. The stage was arranged as a lounge, and prettily decorated. Many hued and varied were the dresses of the ‘ladies, some of the ladies favouring the new long lines for evening frocks. Others preferred the short frock, and still others uneven hem lines, dips, flares, frills and peaks. During the evening a group of Maori lady entertainers gave several poi dances, which were greatly appreciated and enjoyed. Mr Bernie also contributed step dances to a mouth organ accompaniment. The committee, under the secretaryship of Mr J. McKay, did excellent work towards making the ball the complete success it turned out to be. The ‘ladies of the district provided a most excellent and appetising supper. Extras were played by Miss Peters, and Messrs. West, Minifie and Boyd, and the duties of MjC. ’s. were capably undertaken by Messrs. L. Pike, McKay and Atkinson.
