UNEMPLOYMENT.

MASTERTON POSITION. MORE HOPEFUL OUTLOOK. Yesterday afternon Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., and Mr A. E. Jones, chairman of the Unemployed Committee, met the chairman (Mr J. W. A. Falloon) of the Masterton County Council. The Masterton position in regard to unemployment was put before Mr Falloon, and the assistance of his Council sought. As an outcome of the discussion, Mr Sykes is to obtain confirmation of the Government’s subsidy for unemployment works. When this is to hand, a special meeting of the Masterton County Council will be convened in order to discuss the position.

BOROUGH WORKS. This morning members of the committee met the Mayor (Mr T. who stated that the Borough Council would endeavour to absorb some of the unemployed married men. The Mayor anticipates that the Borough Engineer will have his figures in regard to the Waipoua river beautifying scheme eom--pleted to-morrow. It is also reported that Mr C. R. Mabson lias in preparation an improvement scheme for the area recently added to the Masterton Park, on the eastern side of the Northern Approach, on which some of the unemployed may be absorbed.

Members of the committee are to meet the Mayor and the Borough Engineer this afternoon.

Appreciation has been expressed by the committee at the spirit shown by the local bodies approached, and as a result the position seems much more hopeful.
