UNEMPLOYMENT.

Reports from various parts of the Dominion state that unemployment is general, and that the position is fairly serious, though, of course, it is not nearly as bad as in Australia or in England. In Masterton there are many men out of employment, but with the prospect of more work being available in the spring and summer months, the position may be said to be only acute for the time being. In the circumstances, what is required is work to tide, the unemployed over the next two months or so, when conditions should improve. A large number of men out of employment is bad for business, and the conditions ruling in a town reflect themselves in the country, there being a lesser demand for the products of the farm. It is the duty of town and country to join forces in an endeavour to meet the position, and see whether work cannot be provided for those who are in need of it.
