UNEMPLOYMENT.

THE MASTERTON PROBLEM. COMMITTEE MEET. A meeting of tlie -committee, set up at Saturday’s meeting of unemployed, was held this morning. Mr A. E. Jones was voted to the chair, and other members present were: Messrs T. Hutchinson, W. •11. Stevenson, J. Cockburn and C. 11. Corkill.

Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., attended and stated that he was surprised at the seriousnes of the position in Masterton as revealed on Saturday. It was stated that a deputation to the Borough ‘Council would not be necesary, as the Mayor (Mr T. Jordan) would take the matter up when lie was in possession of details regarding the number out of work.' The particulars Avere forAA'arded to the Mayor this morning.

COUNTY COUNCIL APPROACHED. The committee, accompanied by Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., Avaited on the County Clerk, Mr J. C. D: Mackley, this morning. The deputation, Avliieh was introduced by Mr Sykes, Avas informed by the County Clerk (Mr Mackley) that no financial provision had been made this year by the 'County Council for relief Avorks. He pointed out that during the past tAvo years £6OOO, including the GoA’cmment subsidy, had been spent by the Matserton County Council for the relief of unemployment. Mr Mackley said that he Avould get into touch AA’ith the chairman, Mr J. W. A. Falloon, as the matter of convening a special meeting of the Council to deal Avith the representations of the deputation rested Avith him.

Later in .the morning the committee Avas informed that the Masterton County Council chairman (Mr J. W. A. Falloon) had agreed to discuss the matter Avith Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P., this afternoon.

OTHER AVENUES. Endeavours are being made to induce the contractors for the neAV theatre, Avhicli is being started almost immediately, to employ as many of the local unemployed men as possible. BetAveen 40 and 50 men Avere at the site early this morning in hopes of being engaged. It is also hoped that something might be done to expedite the Waipoua river beautifying scheme.

The ReA\ H. Dyson, who was chairman at the meeting of unemployed on Saturday, was wrongly reported as stating “this is about the only toAvn Avhere they don’t move.” The words Avere used by a member of the audience, avlio interjected.
