RIFLE SHOOTING.
ARMY MEETING,
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) TRENTIIAM, This Day.
The Army rifle meeting opened this morning in dull but fine weather. There are 624 competitors, being 56 in advance of last year. The total strength of all ranks is 829.
Brigadier Burgess addressed tho assembly, impressing upon the contestants the necessity of discipline and good conduct. Everything possible has been accomplished to ensure tho comfort and health of the youths, forty per cent, of whom arc attending the meeting for the first time. Every unit in the territorial and cadet forces of New Zealand are represented, and also tho navy and the air force.
Keenness is manifested, particular interest being centred in the competitions. Previous King’s medallists are present, the holder being Sergeant Major J. Kearny (Napier), who secured the service championship at the recent national rifle association meeting. Sergeant Major Moore (Wanganui), who won tho army championship and King’s medal at the initial meeting in 1923, is a competitor, and also Captain W. Masefield (Blenheim) who was second in the rifle championship a week ago.
