LAWN TENNIS.
MASTERTON PARK CLUB. There was a large attendance of players and others at the Masterton Park Tennis Club’s opening day on Saturday, and under ideal conditions for tennis, everyone had an enjoyable afternoon. The president, Mr J. Allan, who declared the season open, extended a warm welcome to the new' players and visitors, and wished the club every success in the coming year. Mrs Allan then served the first ball and the courts were open for play. A Yankee tournament was played, L. Person and Miss Caverhill winning in the final against Mills and Miss Vincent, 25/19. The semi-finals resulted: — Mills and Miss Vincent beat Miss D. Allan and Mrs Garvitch; Person and Miss Caverhill beat Pinfold and Miss B. Preston.
MEMORIAL PARK CLUB. There was a record attendance at the opening of the Memorial Park Tennis Club on Saturday, visitors being present from Featherston, Carterton, Greytown and Martinborough. The president (Mr J. L. Hughes) formally declared the courts open for tho season, and extended a hearty welcome to the new members. Miss Harrap then served the first ball across tho net. A combined doubles knock-out competition Avas played, in Avhieh one hundred and twenty players participated. For so early in the season the standard of tennis Avas quite good, and tho final, Avhieh Avas won by Miss K. Wiekens and Mr S. A. La Roche, was very keenly contested.
ST. MATTHEW’S CLUB. The St. Matthew’s Tennis Club had a very successful opening on Saturday afternoon, when there was a largo attendance of members and friends. The Kev. W. Bullock declared the season open, and in doing so referred to tho good prospects for the coming . year. The club now had a membership of about sixty. The present position of the club, said Mr Bullock, was largely the result of its early workers, including Miss Spencer, who was secretary for the first few years of its existence. A knock-out competition was played, the final being a good contest between R-. Campbell (Mt. Bruce) and Miss. Clark, and W. Winkall and Miss Magrath, the former partnership winning by 31 to 15.
KOPUAKANGA CLUB. The opening day of the Kopuaranga Tennis Club was held on Saturday in beautiful weather. There were twentysix members present, and some \ cry good games were played. There are some promising players in this young club, and it is intended to' play several inter-club matches during the season. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies’ committee, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent by all.
