RIFLE SHOOTING.

MASTERTON-OPAKI CLUE. Opaki Club members turned out in strength on Saturday and there was a keen contest for Mr G. It. Sykes’s handsome trophy, which consisted of a set of pipes in a case. The conditions were not of the best for high scoring, but there were some close finishes amongst the handicap men, three tying for second place. Windy conditions prevailed especially at the 600 yards range, where 42 was the highest score off the rifle. This was obtained by Mr J. Dean. Mr C. Johansen topped the list with a 'wellearned 84 off tho rifle. He was closely followed by L. Hill, K. McCalmont and J. Gallagher, each with a total of 92 points, the winner beating them by one point. Tho following are the scores, the conditions being ten shots at 500 and 600 yards, with a limit of 93 for handicap men:-

Also fired: C. M. Pickering, 39, 36, 12, 85; J. McCalmont, 38, 35, 12, 85; R. McPherson, 39, 41, 4, 84; J. E. MV. Calwell, 37, 37, 9, 83; H. K. The club will continue its competitions next Saturday, when another handsome trophy, presented by Mr Fred Keen, will be fired for.

WAIRARAPA V. WELLINGTON. On Saturday afternoon a home and home match was fired between teams representing tho Wellington and Wairarapa Associations. This match was the first of a series to be arranged by the Wellington Association, with . the object of creating an inter-association ri-alry, which will stimulate a greater interest in riflo shooting generally. The match was fired on the home ranges of the two associations.

At Trentham the Wellington team had to contend with one of the most tricky winds yet experienced, a “headon fish-tail” variety, and one that made good scoring almost an impossibility. Shooting conditions on the Papawai range for the Wairarapa team were also difficult owing to a south-

erly “fish-tail.” The outstanding scorer for the Wairarapa team was E. J. King, who put on 49 at the 500 yards and 48 at the 600 yards. Wairarapa Club won by 1714 points to 1672.
