CRICKET.

GAME IN WAIRARAPA. .Cricket began in earnest in Masterton on Saturday, when the season was formally opened in beautiful weather by the Rev. E. 0. Blamires, chairman of the management committee. At the Park Oval, a friendly match was played between teams representing the United and Oddfellows’ Clubs, and resulted in a win for the former club by 20 runs. Mr A. Patrick captained tho winners, and Mr A. E. Freeman the losers.

Mr Blamires, who apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, wished the teams every success during the season, and emphasised the opportunities offered this year by the visit of the English cricketers to the Wairarapa. He also urged players to play the game in the true spirit, of cricket.

The Old Boys and High School teams held a practice at the school grounds. Mr Blamires also addressed the players at the School grounds, and welcomed to Wairarapa cricket Mr Bruce Massey, tlio Wellington provincial cricketer, now on the staff of the Wairarapa High School. While welcoming Mr Massey, Mr Blamires expressed keen regret at the impending departure of Dr. G. H. Uttley. The Wairarapa competitions, in all grades, will commence next Saturday.
