It is now officially announced that the Prince of Wales will leave England for his East African tour with his brother, the Duke of Gloucester, on September 7. The King of Spain has been promoted to field-marshal in the British Army, says a London cable.

The Bev. Canon W. S. Bean commenced his thirty-seventh year as vicar of St. Alary’s Church, Addington, Christchurch, on Sunday last. The Bev. Whitby James, and • Airs Whitby James, of Tinui, are in Wellington, where the Bev. Whitby James will attend a meeting of Diocesan Synod.

The engagement is announced of Phyllis Catherine, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. B. Brickell, of Kent Street, Carterton, to Leo Gordon, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. E. Wakely, Nixon Street, Wanganui East.

The death took jdace on Sunday afternoon, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs H. Orams, Featherston, of Air Bobert Johnson. The deceased, who was So years of age, was an old and highly respected resident of the West Coast.

The appointment of Mr E. Phillips Turner, Secretary of the Forestry De partment, as Director of Forestry, in succession to .Mr L. M. Ellis, who resigned, was announced yesterday by the Commissioner of State Forests (the Hon. O. J. Ilawken).

Captain G. AIcI. Bruce, of Lincolnshire Regiment, who has been on exchange to the New Zealand Defence Department and has been area officer in Wellington for two years, will leave on Friday to rejoin his regiment in India. The duties of area oflieer are being discharged by Captain Gentry. Air Duncan Campion died at Wanganui on Saturday, agde 73 years, after a long and painful illness. He was a member of a well-known pioneer family of Bangitikei, where he was born. In his younger days he was a successful amateur steeplechase rider and owner. He was buried in the family cemetery of the Fraser Clan at Parewanui yesterday. The death occurred at the Greytown Hospital yesterday afternoon of Air J. S. Kent-Johnston, an old resident of the town, after a short illness. Deceased was at otic time a member of the GreytoAvn Borough Council, and'at the time of his death was a member of the Wairarapa Licensing Committee. He was a South African War Veteran. He was the son of Colonel Johnston (Imperial Army), and had lived at Greytown several years. He married Miss I. llastwell.

Air J. W. Henderson, who has been a resident of Carterton for a number of years, left yesterday for Lower Hutt, where he intends to reside. During his residence in Carterton, Mr Henderson took an active interest in school matters, being secretary of the school committee, and while resident at South Featherston, lie also lenderea useful service to the school in that district. He was an active member of the Carterton Football Club in coaching a lower grade team. He was a prominent member of the Carterton Amateur Athletic Club. An old resident of the Wairarapa district, in the person of Air William Whiteman, died at his residence, Totara Street, Lansdowne, yesterday, after a long illness. The late Air Whiteman, who was 74 years of age, was born at Taita, Hutt, and came to the Wairarapa district about 45 years ago. He later took up his residence in Alasterton. He is survived by a widow and family of two daughters and three sons. His daughters are Airs J. Oliver, Pine Street, and Airs F. Groube, Bimu Street, Masterton, and his sons Alessrs George, Third Street, Alasterton, James, Bangiotu, and Bobert Whiteman, Kaiparoro. The funeral -will leave his late residence at 1 p.m. to-morrow for the- Greytown Cemetery. On Saturday evening last a number of Alfredton residents journeyed to Ilaunui to take part in a surprise party to Air and Airs B. J. Harman, it being the occasion of their silver wedding. Air Tanslev, on behalf of those present, presented Mr and Airs Harman with a silver tea service and wished them many more years of prosperity and happiness. Air Harman, who was greeted with applause, said it was a very pleasant surprise, and he wished to thank all present for their kind remarks. Both Airs Harman and himself would cherish the present and the sentiments expressed. They had always done their bit for the district and would continue to do so. The rooms were cleared for dancing and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The death occurred recently at W'alton, in the Auckland province, of Mr H. T. Southern at the great age of 101 years. The late Air Southee came to New Zealand with his father (who founded the first flour mill in Wellington) by the sailing vessel Lady Nugent in 1841. Ffr over sixty years he engaged in farming in the Hutt Valley. He became a prominent member of the Oddfellows’ Loyal Bose Lodge at Lower Hutt, and was also a member of the A'olunteer Militia, and saw active service in the Alaori War. The late Air Southee left Lower Hutt to reside at AValtxm, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits. Always an enthusiastic gardener he indulged his hobby almost to the end. He was married four times and is* survived by two sons and eight grandchildren. The interment took place at Feilding.
