PONGAROA INCIDENT.
SEQUEL IN COURT. (By Telegraph —-Press Association.) PAHIATUA, This Day. A case of unusual interest to residents of Pongaroa was heard in the Pali iatua S.M. Court yesterda}", before Mr Free, S.M., when Michael Francis -Dillon was charged with having been intoxicated while in charge of a car, and with having assaulted and resisted the police. In connection with the, same incident, Ilenry Dillon was charged with having assaulted and obstructed the police, William A. Reid with having encouraged a person to obstruct the police, and Frederick Wright with having obstructed the police.
On the night of June 9th, Constable John Mclntosh stopped a car in the Pongaroa township driven by Michael Dillon, and endeavoured to arrest him on a charge of having been drunk while driving a car. Defendant resisted, ilenry Dillon, as well as Wright, came to the aid of Michael Dillon, the latter eventually getting away. Nineteen witnesses were called for the defence to say that Michael Dillon was sober. The other defendants declared that they interfered only because the constable had Dillon by the throat in a drain, choking him. Decision was reserved.
The Court was packed by onlookers, most of whom came over forty miles from Pongaroa to hear the proceedings.
