Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M., who has been absent for some months owing to ill-health, is expected to resume his duties on the Napier Bench on July 1 next.

The resignation of Mr C. B. McClure, 8.A., M.C., a member of the staff of the Wairarapa High School, was accepted by the Wairarapa Secondary Education Board last night, with regret. Mr McClure advised that he had been appointed senior assistant at the Feilding Agricultural High School, and that his duties there would commence on September 11. It was decided to thank Mr McClure for his services both in the class room and in the field.

At St. Mark’s Church, Carterton, on Wednesday, the marriage took place of Miss Marie Anderson, youngest daughter of Mrs and the late Mr Peeler Anderson, of Carterton, and formerly of Parkvale, and Mr John Blair Miller, son of Mr Miller, of Seaward Downs, Southland. The bride, Avho was given away by her brother, Mr Oscar Anderson, was prettily gowned in a white georgette dress with panels of petal effect and silver lace. She wore the customary veil and orange blossoms. Miss Mary McCarthy, of Mirtinborough, niece of the bride, was bridesmaid, dressed in pale pink, and Mr T. Miller, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. The Rev. W. Raine was the officiating minister. A reception was held in the Parish Hall, and the young couple left later for the south on their honeymoon tour. On their return they will reside at Park Road, Carterton. At the conclusion of the business at the Eketahuna S.M. Court on Wednesday, Mr T. M. Page referred to the fact that this would be the last appearance of Mr S. L. Pi Free, S.M., on the Bench in Eketahuna, and on behalf of the Bar, the speaker wished him the best of health and enjoyment in his retirement. He expressed a very sincere regret at Mr Free’s retirement, as they could always say that they had received an attentive and careful hearing of their presentations of cases, and the facts were dealt with in an unusually capable manner. The relationship had been a most happy one and they regretted its termination ’in an official sense, although it might be from a somewhat selfish aspect. Constable Ede for the Police, regretted extremely the severance. The police were sometimes faced with awkward situations, but here, as in his capacity of clerk of the court, ho had always received every consideration and the best of advice. He stated Mr Free’s decisions had always been sound and it would be a hard job to fill his position. He wished Mr Free every happiness and good health in his retirement. Mr Free suitably acknowledged the remarks made.

Mr R. J. Bennell, who has been appointed to succeed the late Mr M. J. Brookes as Wellington manager of the Bristol Piano Company, has taken up his duties. As a New Zealand resident of 27 years’ standing, for the last 19 years of which he has been manager of the Dunedin branch of the company, Mr Bennell has made friends in all parts of the Dominion. The esteem in which he was regarded in Dunedin was indicated by several farewell functoins. Qne of the most interesting of these was a gathering of men interested in civic life which took place in the Grand Hotel there a few days ago, when reference was made to the valuable work Mr Bennell had done in raising funds for philanthropic purposes, and objects connected with the advancement of ; the city, and notably in the campaign to raise £IO,OOO to enable the memorial building to be handed over to the Returned Soldiers' Association free of debt. On behalf of those present Mr Bennell received a present in the form of a smoker’s cabinet, a handsome case of pipes, and a tobacco pouch. Mr. Bennell was also farewelled by the staff (who presented him with a valuable set of crystal ware), and also by the professional musicians of Dunedin.
