Five of the nine men rescued when (lie explosion occurred in the coal mine at Mather, Pennsylvania, are in liospital and are not expected to live. Experts believe that none of those entrapped in the mine will be found alive, but all possible aid and rescue work has been extended by Red Cross and other organisations, and by miners. The explosion took place as the day and night men were shifting their places, and caught part of each group. Workers believe that many bodies are now hidden in the debris. Thirty-four bodies of miners have been recovered. There is little hope for the balance of over one hundred and twenty men. —Australian and N.Z. J’le.ss Association.
