EXHIBITION BUILDING.
(To the E htor). Sir, —I have read the letter in Tour paper of the 22nd December re exhibition building, with estimates made by the borough engineer (Mr Mabson) and submitted to the chairman of the Exhibition Committee. Re estimates, he suggests a building facing 2 chains to Dixon street, 2 chains Queen street, and a full frontage (approximately 5 chains) to Russell street, for the sum of £2OOO. It seems to me that to cover an acre of ground with a building of concrete block walls, steel and iron roof, and olliees with wooden tloors, for tills sum is open to question. I have had considerable experience in contracting for the building trade, and to me (without the plans to estimate cost from) it would cost at least twice this amount. The suggestion that prison labour be procured for the concrete blocks, and brought all the way from Wellington, considering that it is to be a 8.1. M. building, and as so many workers are out of employment in Masterton at the present time, is altogether wrong.—l am, etc., EXPERIENCE.
