SKJELLERUP’S COMET.
EUROPEAN OBSERVATIONS. BERLIN, Wednesday. tSkjellerup's comet was sighted by Potsdam Observatory and the Bcrgendorf Observatory, Hamburg, where it is regarded as identical with the periodic comet discovered by Devico in 1544. i The authorities of Potsdam University arc inclined to agree with this opinion, arguing that the loss of the Devico comet was probably due to its being deflected from its regular orbits by planetary disturbances. Hamburg Observatory reports that the apparent course of the comet is somewhat different from what the observations in the Southern Hemisphere suggested, as the comet did not come as far into the Northern sky as anticipated. When last seen from Hamburg Observatory it was only 12 degrees above the sun, and was difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. A telescope showed a diabolo-shaped mass forming the head and a marked tail two degrees long, pointing upwards and to the ring.
