THE KING’S SPEECH RUGBY. Thursday. Parliament was prorogued to-day, ami tin' King’s Speech was read in the House of Lords by the Lord Chancellor, and in the House of Commons by Mr Speaker. The Speech referred to the journeys of the Prince of Wales and Prince George to Canada, and of Jhe Duke and Duchess of York to New Zealand and other parts of the Dominions. j 1 i s Majesty rejoiced on their return and said that he had learned from them with deep satisfaction of the loyal and enthusiastic welcome which they had invariably experienced throughout their journeys. After referring to the visits of the French President and the King of Egypt, His Majesty said that he had watched with profound sympathy and satisfaction the steady growth in infiu-em-e of the League of Nations and the increasing part which it plays in composing international differences and preserving peace. The recent, meeting of the Council at Geneva had marked a further stage in this progress.. “My Government,’’ he said, “will continue to base its policy on loyal cooperation with the League.’’ The Speech regretted that though there was much community of view, it was not possible to reach a general agreement at the conference with the representatives of the United States and Japan held at Geneva on the question of further limitation of naval armaments. “But," the Speech proceeded, “despite this temporary failure, my Government has no intention of embarking upon an increase of their naval building programme, which is based upon a considered view of the defensive needs of my widespread Empire.” —British Official Wireless.
