SHEFFIELD SHIELD. VICTORIA v. NEW SOUTH WALES. MELBOURNE, Friday. The Sheffield Shield match, New South Wales v. Victoria, commenced today. Victoria in the first innings had made 355 (Ponsford 202. Woodfull 99) when stumps were drawn. MeXamcc took seven wickets for 77, and Mailoy three for 117. The weather was fine, with perfect cricket conditions. Ponsford and Woodfull gave a sparkling exhibition, treating all the bowlers with unconcern, Ponsford being particularly brilliant and never being troubled by the visitors’ attack. Woodfull was more careful and took no chances. The fielding was very keen, and the bowlers, Mailev and McNamee, were at the toil of their form. S. AUSTRALIA v. QUEENSLAND ADELAIDE, Friday. The Sheffield Shield match, South Australia against Queensland, commenced to-day. The home side batted first, and had six wickets down for 296 (Alexander 84, Harris 44, Ryan 86) when stumps were drawn. The weather was fine and hot and tiie wicket good. The scoring was very slow at first, but later livened up against excellent fielding and bowling. Bensted then got to work with the ball in deadly fashion, and quickly dismissed the southerners.
