BANKRUPT CARPENTER.

MEETING OF CREDITORS. A meeting of creditors of Charles Orr, carpenter, of Wellington, which was called before the Official Assignee (Mr S. Tausley),' at Wellington, yesterday, lapsed for want of a quorum. The debts lo unsecured creditors were set down at £241 8s Sd, and the total assets at £7O, leaving a deficiency of £l7l 8s Sd. The principal unsecured creditors are the Scott Timber Company\(£or whom Mr Kennedy appeared), (£l7O 10s 7dL Briscoe and Co. (£25 18s Id), and \\. Foothead (£43). Bankrupt, in his statement, said that in Xovcmber, 1020, he started a joo, but owing to the State Advances Office being very much behind time in making the first payment, he had to borrow money to pay wages, etc. His next joo was nearly finished before he received any payment from the State Advances Office, consequently lie had some trouble in finding money to make accessary payments. Bankrupt further stated that ill-health apd the high cost of building materials helped to bring about his present position. Mr Kennedy asked bankrupt if he had ever lived in Masterton, and if lie had ever traded under the name of Hoarc, to which lie gave an emphatic denial, even when a witness was brought forward, ft was then stated that there was a man named Hoare working on the same job. Mr Kennedy: Are the two men mentioned in your statement your sons-in-law? Bankrupt: Yes. Mr Kennedy: Then your sons-in-law are getting cheap properties at the expense of your creditors? Bankrupt: It seems like it. In answer to a question by Mr Kennedy regarding a party given for bankrupt's son, Orr stated that it was given as a farewell to his son and was paid for by Mrs Orr. Mr Kennedy asked where the money came from, to which bankrupt replied: ‘‘That’s what I would like to know.” The Official Assignee instructed the bankrupt to send in his books for inspection, and adjourned the meeting sine die.
