NEW YEAR’S EVE.
(To the Editor). •Sir, —Is there any sound reason for observing Xew Year’s Eve on Friday night instead of on the actual date (Saturday)? As a man in the street 1 hear numerous arguments for and against from all points of view, but the spirit of the occasion seems to be entirely overlooked. Quite apart from five extra business that would result by the shops keeping open all day on Saturday (Xew Year’s Eve), methinks it is a duty of all who can help to do so, to herald in the Xew Year with as much pomp and joy as possible. The shops being open and staffs and customers gathered in the town is all that is necessary to assure that old-time recognition of this great annual event. If the spirit of this season has departed one might reasonably ask why observe a holiday for it? I understand that about half the town has been persuaded to close on Xew Year’s /Eve and that one advocate of this retrograde step was using the argument that those who kept open would somehow be unpopular. If any unpopularity should arise surely it would be at the doors of those who flout the occasion by closing their shops when there is no obligation to do so. What say ye, men of Caledonia —I am, etc., FESTIVE SEASON. Masterton, December 23, 1927.
