Mr and Mrs Strouts and family left Masterton yesterday for Wanganui, wheic they will stay for some time. A London cablegram reports that the death has occurred of Mr Charles Gourticc Bounds, the actor and vocalist, aged 65. Major-General S. B. Davidson, C. 8., C’.AI.G. (retired from Indian Army service) is at present visiting his sister, Mrs IT. B. Horsbrugh, at AVaiorongomai, Featherston. Mrs T. R. Barrel- has been appointed representative of the Wairarapa Secondary, Education Board on the Council of the Masterton Association for the Advancement of Education. The staff of the Carterton Post Office presented Miss E. Scott, supervisor of the telephone exchange, with a set of crystal ware, as a token of esteem in view of her approaching marriage. - i A Melbourne cable reports the death of ‘•.lack” Saunders, the Australian cricketer, aged 52. -Saunders was coach to the Wellington Cricket Association for -several years before the war and was a noted bowler. He played on many occasions for Australia in test matches.

A number of members of the Grevtown Oddfellows’ Lodge paid a surprise visit to the home of Air and Airs Barnett Phelps, Waiohine Gorge, on Tuesday night, when Airs Phelps, who was an officer of the Lodge prior to her marriage, was presented with a handsome set of carvers. The presentation was made by Bro. W. Grigg, N.G., who, on behalf of the Lodge members, wished Air and Airs Phelps long life and happiness A Press Association cablegram from Rome says It is learned authoritatively that the engagement of the Crown Prince of Italy to Princess Marie Jose, of Belgium, will be officially announced in the spring and that the wedding will take place at Turin considerably later. The death took place at the Alasterton Hospital yesterday of Air Joseph Stringer, of Carterton. The deceased, who was 45 years of age, was taken seriously ill three weeks ago. For a number of years he had been employed at the Waingawa Freezing Works, and was an enthusiastic member of the Carterton Alunicipal Silver Band. He leaves a widow and two children, the oldest of whom is 13 years of age.

At the invitation of Alesdames S. Wilson, J. Harman and Cole, the friends of Aliss Eileen Clarke entertained her at a gift evening in the Trades Hall last night in honour of her approaching marriage. There was a large attendance and the many useful presents received testified to the popularity of the guest of the evening. A number of games and competitions were interspersed with dancing, the music for- which was supplied by Messrs C. AVilson and AI. Devine. Musical and elocutionary items were given by Alisses Isla and Alavis Jones. A dainty supper provided by the hostesses contributed to the success of the evening.

.V wedding- of great interest was celebrated on AVednesday in the Aletliodist Church, Carterton, the contracting parties being Aliss Elizabeth Trask, eldest daughter of Air and Airs Gideon Trask, Hilton Road. Carterton, and Air AVilliam Frederick Hansen, eldest son of Air and Airs A. Hansen, of AVcllington. The Rev. R. P. Keall was the officiating minister. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a' saxe blue eharmelaine costume, with I hat to match. Aliss Alartha Trask, sister of the bride, acted as bridesmaid, and wore a coral pink frock and hat to match. The bouquets carried by the bride and bridesmaid, were very kindly supplied by Aliss Murray, AVellington. Air A. -McKay, of Longbush, was best man. The choir (of which tho bride was a valued member) assisted ;it the service. Aliss Alavis Stevens officiated at the organ. A very pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Air and Airs Rutter, Tararua street, on AVednesday evening. in music, songs, games and recitations. The teachers of AYcsley Sunday School gave -a "surprise” party to Aliss Rutter, who is home on a holiday from' Wanganui. Aliss Rutter left rather hurriedly some five months ago to take up her duties as a Karitane nurse in Wanganui. There was no time to give expression to the' high regard in which she’ was held, or to recognise her faithful services as a teacher in the kindergarten department of the school, so on AVednesday evening the teachers presented her with a beautiful handbag and book. The Rev. AVm. Beckett voiced the kindly thoughts of the school staff and expressed hearty good wishes for her future. Aliss Rutter suitably acknowledged "the surprise.'’ Air A. E. Bate paid a tribute to Air and Airs Rutter’s work in school and church, and to their gracious hospitality, and Air J. R. Beckett voiced the congratulations of all to Air Allan Rutter on another successful year’s study at the High School.
