THE GREATEST SALVAGER.
DIES IN HOSPITAL. WA R-TIME EFFORTS. LONDON, Tuesday. Fifty millions sterling were saved from the sea by Sir Frederick Young, who died in a London hospital to-day. The Admiralty recognised Sir Frederick as the world’s greatest salvager. For more than thirty years he was known as “ Young of Liverpool.” Before the war lie recovered threequarters of a million of specie from the Oceana, sunk off Eastbourne, and half a million from the Minnehaha, off the Sc illy Islands. Jn war time the Admiralty secured his services to salve warships. Under his direction no fewer, than four hundred ships were saved for the Allies. He vas the first to raise a German U boat. Another great feat Avas the blocking of Portland Harbour by the sinking of the old battleship Hood. The most thrilling exploit was the raising of the British submarine Kl 3, which was sunk through ventilating arrangements being .accidentally left open. Sir Frederick Young raised her after.s(s hours, saving the lives of the crew of 43.
