PRIMARY SCHOOLS.

BREAKING-UP CEREMONIES, MATJKICEVILLE. A lively and varied programme oi vocal items and dialogues, action songs and recitations was rendered last Thursday night l>v the children attending the Maurieevillo School on the' occasion of the breaking-up ceremonv. The hall was tastefully decorated* and illuminated with coloured lights. The youthful performers, considering the very short space of time the recent examination allowed foi actual training, acquitted themselves well, and showed that great credit was due’to Mrs Childs, who worked untiringly night and day to ensure the success of the evening. The accompaniments and music for the evening were very kindly supplied by Mr AV. Neighhours. Mr L. McKay acted as M.C. for the dance that followed. ■During an interval the proficiency pupils and senior scholars each made presentations to Mrs Childs, and the junior scholars also presented a small gift to Miss Kowse, their teacher. Doth teachers returned thanks. Proficiency certificates were presented to Mavis Tildesley, Arthur McGovern, Arthur Myers and Recce Watkins. C. E. Clarke received a full attendance certificate and L. J. Clarke and Reece Watkins good attendance certificates, not having been absent more than five half days. The sports of the combined Wliakataki and Castlepoint Schools were held on Castlepoint Beach on Friday last m very inclement weather, before a good gathering of parents and friends, including the Rev. Whitby James, who 'distributed gifts to all the. children present from the Christmas Ircc. Tea vas provided in Mr Beiliss cottage, kindly lent for the occasion. During the evening dances and games were indulged in and the gathering broke up at 11 o’clock after three hearty cheers bad been given for Miss Dorgan, the teacher of the combined schools, who AV as the prime mover in the gathering, which gave great pleasure to all concerned.
